KT&G builds an elementary school in Nonkeo to support Laos’ educational infrastructure 2022.12.05
KT&G (CEO Baek Bok-in) built an elementary school in Nonkeo, Vientiane, Laos with the Sharing Culture and Arts Association (Chairman Yoo Hyun-sook) and held a completion ceremony on the 1st.

The completion ceremony was attended by Lee Sang-hak, KT&G Sustainability Management Headquarters (Vice President), Yu Hyun-sook, Chairman of the Sharing Culture and Arts Association, Laos Minister of Education and Sports Phew Simmarawong, Laos government officials, and Nonkeo residents.

KT&G endorsed the construction of an elementary school in Nonkeo since last November to support Laos’ educational infrastructure, and it was completed in about a year. The current old and poor school building was replaced as an educational facility with 6 classrooms, a multi-purpose room, a teacher’s office, and 4 bathrooms. Also, equipment such as computers, fans, desks, chairs, and musical instruments were set up in classrooms and multipurpose rooms, including a soccer field that was built outdoors.

The cost of building the school was completely covered by the ‘Sangsang Fund’, which was raised through voluntary donations from KT&G employees. ‘Sangsang Fund’, launched in 2011, is KT&G’s unique social contribution fund. When executives and employees voluntarily donate a certain amount of their monthly salary, it is made in the form of a ‘matching grant’ in which the company adds the same amount, and is used to support the underprivileged at home and abroad and solve urgent social problems. In August, KT&G sent over an employee volunteer group to Nonkeo, Laos, where employees directly helped build an elementary school.

Lee Sang-hak, head of KT&G’s Sustainability Management Headquarters, said, “I hope that the establishment of an elementary school in Nonkeo will be of some help to future generations and improve the educational environment in Laos.” “We will continue to cooperate and engage in solving social problems in countries in need with the attitude of a global corporate citizen,” he said.

Meanwhile, in 2019, KT&G built an elementary school in Khampanae, Savannakhet, Laos.
