The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recognized KT&G (CEO Bok-in Baek) for its outstanding support of culture and the arts and gave ‘excellent culture and arts support organization’ certification on November 22.

‘Excellent culture and arts support organization’ certification hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and supervised by Korean Culture and Arts Committee was introduced last year to explore and activate exemplary organizations and companies which provide various support for culture and arts group and artist.

KT&G opened Sangsangmadang in Nonsan, South Chungcheong, in 2011 and in Chuncheon, Gangwon, in 2014 to support the creative activities of new and unknown artists. After the document examination, on-site due diligence and review by professional experts, the certification was presented to KT&G for the efforts to expand the cultural facilities to regions outside of Seoul as well as provide the public with opportunities to enjoy a wide range of art and culture..

KT&G’s Sangsangmadang centers currently have more than 2,600 cultural programs including performance, exhibitions, design and education, and attract 1.8 million visitors annually, to become a representative culture and arts complex.

“KT&G invested 80.8 billion won last year and over 50 billion won annually, in social contribution activities held both domestically and internationally, especially in cultural support,” said Ji Hyo-seok, who is in charge of KT&G’s social contribution activities. “We will continue to focus on creating various programs to support the work of talented artists and communicate with the public through art.”

Last year, the company also won the grand prize by the President of Korea at the 2015 Mecenat Conference and Awards for ‘non-mainstream culture support’ and activation of local culture in geographically disadvantaged area.
