In anticipation of the Day of West Sea Defense, KT&G Sangsang Madang is holding ‘The Song of the Sea’ exhibition at the Sangsang Madang Daechi Gallery until the 28th, paying tribute to the valiant heroes who defended freedom with their dedication.

The Day of West Sea Defense was established in 2016 to commemorate the sacrifice of the patriotic heroes who fought and laid down their lives against provocations by North Korea, including the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong, the sinking of the Cheonan, and the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island. It is observed annually on the fourth Friday of March.

‘The Song of the Sea’ is an event that memorializes the 55 heroes of the West Sea defense through artworks expressing reminiscence and longing. It features a total of six works, including ‘Drift’ and ‘Waves’ by artist Kim Yoon-soo, centered around themes like the wind and moonlight of the sea.

The exhibition's signature piece, ‘Drift,’ an acrylic on canvas, captures a tranquil and dreamlike image through the boundless seascape. Another work, ‘Waves,’ visualizes the fleeting moment of dispersing waves, expressing a reflection on things forgotten or lost.

Kim Jung-yoon, the head of the Exhibition Division at KT&G's Cultural Contributions Department, stated, ＂Through ‘The Song of the Sea’ exhibition held in commemoration of the Day of West Sea Defense, we hope that many visitors will honor and remember the guardians who sacrificed for our nation.＂

Meanwhile, KT&G Sangsang Madang is a multi-cultural arts space that supports the creative activities of emerging artists and provides the public with a wide range of cultural experiences. Since launching ‘Sangsang Madang Hongdae’ in 2007, it has expanded to operate in five locations, including Nonsan, Chuncheon, Daechi, and Busan, contributing to the expansion of the cultural and arts base and regional cultural development. Sangsang Madang welcomes about 3 million visitors annually, with over 3,000 cultural and arts programs operated each year.
