KT&G’s Sangsang Univ. Volunteers Conducting Cooling Paint Service in Indonesia to Combat Heatwaves

KT&G Sangsang Univ. in Indonesia conducted volunteer activities on the 23rd in Jakarta to prepare for the increasingly severe heatwaves caused by global warming.
Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, has experienced one of the longest heatwaves in the world last year, highlighting the serious impact of climate change-induced global warming. The situation is dire as there is a lack of infrastructure to provide relief from the heat, resulting in a steady increase in heatstroke patients. Hence, there's a need for safety protocols designed specifically for marginalized groups at risk during heatwaves.
KT&G Sangsang Univ., along with about 20 local university students and officials in Jakarta, conducted a volunteer activity at Ayasan Satria Elementary and Middle School, which has a high proportion of low-income students, by applying cooling paint to the roofs of the buildings. Cooling paint has the effect of reflecting solar heat, reducing the temperature inside the building by up to 10 degrees Celsius, thereby preventing heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke caused by the heat.
Furthermore, KT&G has been actively carrying out social contribution activities in Indonesia. Since 2012, they have dispatched over 400 overseas volunteer groups to improve housing and educational environments. In 2014, they established the KT&G Korean Language School in Indonesia, providing Korean language education and cultural experiences to approximately 2,800 individuals to date. In 2021, they opened the KT&G Vocational Training Center at UKCW University in Malang, providing education in sewing, computer technology, and other skills to marginalized women and youth for economic self-reliance.
A KT&G representative stated, "As a company that has been conducting business in Indonesia for over 10 years, we have been continuously carrying out social contribution activities to address local social issues and improve infrastructure." He added, "We hope that this volunteer activity will raise awareness of climate change issues in Indonesia and help protect the safety of marginalized communities in the region."
Meanwhile, KT&G Sangsang Univ. is a social contribution program operated by KT&G domestically and internationally to enhance the cultural literacy and employability of college students. Since 2017, KT&G has been operating Sangsang Univ. composed of local university students in Indonesia. Representative programs include online and offline classes, Sangsang Festa, and Sangsang Startup School.
