KT&G Completes Conservation Project of ‘JangguMegi Wetland’ in Collaboration with the National Institute of Ecology

KT&G (President Baek Bok-In) completed the conservation construction of the 'JangguMegi Wetland' located in Yeongyang County, Gyeongbuk this past January, in collaboration with the National Institute of Ecology.
The 'JangguMegi Wetland' is a mountain wetland spanning approximately 38,000m². It is particularly valued for conservation due to its excellent natural state and as the habitat for over 20 key species, including endangered ones. However, in 2022, the habitat was threatened by environmental degradation such as sediment inflow and erosion caused by nearby roads.
To address this, KT&G and the National Institute of Ecology undertook restoration work to maintain the wetland's inherent functions, enhance biodiversity, and ensure ongoing preservation and management. Both KT&G and the National Institute of Ecology carried out restoration of the water channels affected by erosion, installed wooden fences and sandbags to prevent sediment inflow, and worked diligently to restore the damaged habitat. They also created walkways to facilitate future management of the wetland.
In September 2022, KT&G signed a 'Memorandum of Understanding for Ecosystem Conservation and Biodiversity Enhancement' with the National Institute of Ecology. As their first collaborative project, they embarked on the 'JangguMegi Wetland' conservation effort, and as a second initiative following the wetland restoration, they plan to consider a restoration project for the endangered and natural monument species, the Black Stork.
Sang-Hak Lee, Head of Sustainable Management at KT&G, stated, "Together with the National Institute of Ecology, we have continued activities to conserve and enhance biodiversity for the construction of a healthy ecosystem for future generations." He further expressed, "We will continue to engage in various environmental protection activities and strive to safeguard the shared values of our society."
Meanwhile, KT&G has been making various efforts to improve environmental issues, including afforestation and practices towards carbon neutrality. In April of last year, KT&G created the 'KT&G Sangsang Forest' in Bonghwa County (Bonghwa-gun), Gyeongbuk, for the restoration of forests damaged by wildfires and ecological recovery. Additionally, in January this year, they signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) as a practice for carbon neutrality. With this agreement, KT&G expects to replace 7.5% of its total power usage with renewable energy, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 6,640 tCO2.
