KT&G (CEO Baek Bok-in) and the National Institute of Ecology signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the 26th to promote ecosystem conservation and biodiversity.

The ceremony was held at the National Institute of Ecology's Endangered Species Restoration Center in Yeongyang-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, with Lee Sang-hak, Vice President of KT&G's Sustainability Management Headquarters, and Jo Do-soon, Director of the National Institute of Ecology, in attendance.  With this agreement, the two companies will plan and implement activities to protect the ecosystem and restore biodiversity in collaboration.

The Janggumegi wetland in Yeongyang-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, was designated for the first collaborative project between KT&G and the National Institute of Ecology.  Janggumegi Wetland is a mountainous wetland with an area of approximately 38,000m², and its conservation value is high due to its large size and outstanding natural characteristics.  Currently, biodiversity is declining due to the destruction of habitats caused by the surrounding roads' soil erosion and excavation.  Consequently, KT&G and the National Institute of Ecology intend to conduct research aimed at restoring degraded biological habitats and enhancing biodiversity. In addition, the two companies intend to collaborate on a variety of ecosystem protection activities and establish a system of cooperation in the field of biodiversity. 

The head of KT&G's Sustainability Management Headquarters, Lee Sang-hak, stated, "To build a healthy ecosystem for future generations, we decided to join forces with the National Institute of Ecology to participate in biodiversity conservation and promotion activities.” He added, "We will continue to engage in a variety of environmental protection activities and protect the shared values of our society.”

Meanwhile, KT&G is engaged in a variety of environmental improvement initiatives, including domestic and international forest creation and marine environment protection.  Last year, KT&G established carbon-neutral forests in Daegwallyeong, Gangwon-do, and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.  In May, KT&G signed the second Marine Environment Protection Business Agreement (MOU) with the Korea Marine Environment Corporation and Our Sea of East Asia Network (OSEAN), and we are actively participating in activities to protect the marine ecosystem, such as conducting surveys of marine pollution and cleaning up along the country's coastlines.
