KT&G (CEO Baek Bok-in) newly received the ISO 50001 certification (energy management system) from the International Organization for Standardization, for five plants across the country. KT&G now holds four major ISO certifications (energy, environment, safety, and quality management system) at its plants in Shintanjin, Yeongju, Gwangju, Gimcheon, and Cheonan.

To commemorate the occasion, a certificate awarding ceremony was held at the KT&G office in Daejeon on November 8th. KT&G received the ISO 50001 certificate with about ten people attending, including Kim Tae-seop, the head of KT&G's production division, and Song Ji-young, CEO of the Korea Foundation for Quality. 

ISO 50001 is energy management system standards established by ISO. The certification is given by comprehensive evaluation of the management and sustainability system, including activities of energy saving and efficiency improvement. KT&G was highly acclaimed for execution improvement by establishing energy targets for each department, setting priorities for energy reduction through analysis of major energy consumption and prescribing an evaluation process. 

With this certification, KT&G now holds four major ISO certifications: ISO 9001 (quality management system), ISO 14001 (environmental management system), ISO 45001 (safety and health management system), and ISO 50001 (energy management system) for five plants in Korea. The achievement is the fruit of continuous efforts at eco-friendly management, starting with the first acquisition of ISO 9001 in the early 2000s.

Meanwhile, in the first half of this year, KT&G declared 'carbon neutrality by 2050', which contains a mid- to long-term objective of environmental management. With the aim of minimizing climate impacts throughout the company's operations and value chain, KT&G set goals based on the SBTi (Science-Based Reduction Target) international guidelines and are implementing them.

A KT&G official said, “The major certifications from ISO prove KT&G as a workplace with clear goals and systematic processes in the fields of energy, environment, safety, and quality. We plan to take the lead in creating a sustainable future value.”
