382 KT&G supports persons with hearing impairments with transparent masks for communicati 2020.10.29

KT&G (President: Baek Bok-In) joins a transparent mask donation campaign to help hearing-impaired people who are experiencing communication difficulties due to the spread of COVID-19.

On the 28th, KT&G signed a business agreement with the Snail of Love to support “The Snail of Love Transparent Mask Project” at the Snail of Love’s head office in Jung-gu, Seoul, with the participation of Lee Sang-Hak, the sustainable management director of KT&G, and Kim Min-Ja, the president of Snail of Love. With this agreement, transparent masks worth 100 million won will be delivered to organizations used by persons with hearing impairments, such as schools and hospitals, as well as to their homes.

Transparent masks through which one’s lips can be seen are made of front transparent films so that people can see the shape of the other person’s mouth as well as their expressions during conversation. These masks were created to help persons with hearing impairments who experience communication difficulties as wearing masks becomes a part of daily life to prevent infectious diseases.

In particular, transparent masks are essential for teachers who teach students with hearing impairments. According to the 2018 Ministry of Health and Welfare statistics, there are about 6,200 students with hearing impairments nationwide. Most of them attend ordinary schools, receiving integrated education with students without disabilities. Therefore, students can be estranged from their classes due to difficulty understanding the lessons given by teachers who are speaking with masks on.

Shim Yeong-Ah, head of the KT&G social contribution department, said, “We decided to donate transparent masks to guarantee the rights of persons with hearing impairments to live and learn. We will continue to conduct various support activities for those who experience unexpected inconveniences across the community.”
