The ‘KT&G Sangsangmadan Chuncheon’ achieved its accumulated audience 70,000 in 100 days after its opening.
KT&G(CEO: Mr. Min Young-jin) opened ‘KT&G Sangsangmadang at Chuncheon’ in order to contribute to develop culture and art and to invigorate economy in Gangwon-do on April 29th and since then, Sangsangmadang at Chuncheon have showed diverse and rich culture and art programs, settling quickly as a local tourist attraction and main cultural space.
For the opening program, the ‘Remember’ exhibition about births of Chucheon Children’s Center and Sangsangmadang had been held for 55 days. The relay lectures to invite famous people in culture and art field were also provided. Performances such as ‘Hello, Chuncheon’ with Buhwal and DJ DOC attracted local citizens’ heated concerns. Currently, ‘The returned Heroes’ exhibition to meet animation heroes in memories and the performance of ‘Love Lake’, musical trip for one night and two days every month are on the run.
KT&G Sangsangmadang at Chuncheon consists of two buildings, ‘Art Center’ equipped with performance hall, studio, and gallery, and ‘Stay’ containing guest room, culture and art supporting facilities, and convention facilities. Both building were remodeled from Chuncheon Children’s Center and nearby Gangwon Physical Education Center, respectively. The former Chuncheon Children’s Center was designed by the famous Korean architect, the late Kim Su-geun and renovation was done by keeping the existing form as much as possible to succeed its values as cultural legacy in architecture.
A Person concerned in KT&G said that “Before opening the Sangsangmadang, there were few visitors because of old facilities and lack of tourist attractions. However, now, known as ‘a space to experience culture in nature’, visitors from all over the country as well as nearby areas are rapidly increasing.”
KT&G runs three “KT&G Sangsangmadangs”, complex cultural art space in Hongdae, Seoul and Nonsan, Chungnam as well as Chuncheon. Through them, the company supports minor and new artists’ creative activities and provides various and broad cultural experiences to ordinary people.
