KT&G Sejong Plant Acquires Gold Rating from “LEED,” Green Certification System
Executing eco-friendly management that adheres to global standards by drawing 30% of energy consumption
from new renewable sources
KT&G (CEO Bang Kyung-man) acquired the Gold grade in the “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED),” an international certification for eco-friendly buildings.
LEED is an international certification system used by 186 countries around the world. The LEED Gold level rating awarded to the KT&G Sejong Plant is an internationally recognized certification granted only to facilities that meet strict standards related to energy efficiency and water resource management.
During the certification process, the KT&G Sejong Plant received high ratings for reducing water usage and enhancing energy efficiency. By implementing rainwater and gray water recycling systems, as well as water-saving equipment, the plant has reduced its average water consumption by approximately 15% compared to previous levels. Furthermore, with the installation of solar power facilities, approximately 30% of the plant’s total electricity consumption is now supplied by new renewable energy sources, while also increasing the operational efficiency of key equipment, such as refrigeration units and air-handling systems. As a result, the Sejong Plant plans to reduce its annual carbon emissions by about 10% compared to its energy consumption.
Park Jong-rae, Head of KT&G Manufacturing Headquarters’ Facility Improvement Division, stated, “As an eco-friendly facility, the Sejong Plant is faithfully implementing environmental management in alignment with global standards. We will remain committed to practicing sustainable growth and green management by saving energy across all aspects of plant operations, including product manufacturing processes.”
Meanwhile, KT&G has established its environmental vision, “KT&G Green Impact,” to minimize the company’s environmental footprint and strengthen environmental accountability across its value chain. Under the three pillars of “mitigating climate change,” “accelerating the transition to a circular economy,” and “managing natural capital and protecting biodiversity,” KT&G continues to deploy a broad range of environmental management initiatives.
