KT&G (CEO, Bok-in Baek) will donate 1,300 eco-friendly water purifiers to local elementary schools to provide children with the "right to drink clean water" in Tanzania, a country that imports raw leaf tobacco ingredients.

Tanzania is a "water-scarcity" country suffering from low growth and deterioration of national health due to chronic water shortages. 39% of the population does not get safe water but instead uses rainwater and puddles as their primary drinking water sources. This causes waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid, and as a result, severe social problems, such as high infant mortality, continue.

KT&G will donate 1,300 eco-friendly water purifiers to improve Tanzania's drinking water hygiene problem, worth 240 million won. This donation will allow about 260,000 students to drink up to 340 million liters of clean and purified water annually. In addition, this support will replace water purification methods that heat water by burning fuel such as wood and charcoal. This method will contribute to environmental protection by reducing carbon emissions by up to 13,000 tons (t) per year.

KT&G held a delivery ceremony on the 15th at the "ITUNDU" elementary school in Tabora, Tanzania, attended by Jung Sung-hoon, head of KT&G Tanzania's raw material division, and local officials. After the donated goods are manufactured in Korea, local supply is expected to be completed by March next year.

The purifiers supplied by KT&G are gravity filtered water purifiers made by the domestic social venture, Water & Life. The purifiers do not require power and separate consumables using gravity-operated filters. As a result, waterborne bacteria and particulate pollutants like E. coli are removed with high efficiency using a simple operation method.

As overseas projects expand, KT&G solves social problems such as education, housing, and environment in major businesses and underdeveloped countries to fulfill its social responsibility as global corporate citizens. In addition, it practices a "Together company" management ideology through customized international CSR activities.

Young-ah Shim, head of KT&G's Social Contribution office, said, "We are participating in solving social problems in countries that need help in the attitude of global corporate citizens." She also adds, "We plan to establish an ESG management system that meets global standards by maximizing non-financial performance such as environment, society, and governance."
