535 KT&G and Korea Marine Environment Corporation Ocean Sign MOU to Protect the Marine Environment 2022.05.04
KT&G (CEO Baek Bok-in) signed a business agreement with Our Sea of East Asia Network (OSEAN) on the 3rd and agreed to promote marine environment protection activities jointly.

Lee Sang-hak, head of KT&G Sustainability Management Headquarters (Vice President), Yoo Sang-joon, head of Marine Environment Corporation's Marine Conservation Headquarters, and Hong Seon-wook, Director of OSEAN, participated in the signing ceremony at the KT&G Seoul office building.

KT&G intends to strengthen its marine environment protection endeavors through this agreement, which is being continuing for the second consecutive year.  Existing activities, such as marine pollution survey and ocean purification, will continue, but the scope will be expanded to include coastal regions across the country, and volunteer activities involving executives and employees will be expanded to encourage greater participation in fulfilling corporate social responsibilities.

In this regard, KT&G has adopted its "Pet Beach” program. The Pet Beach Program is a volunteer initiative similar to the Adopt-a-Beach program that began in Texas, United States, in 1986, which involves adopting a section of beach and caring for it as if it were a pet. This year, KT&G intends to designate four coastal beaches as pet beaches, as well as collect trash and improve the landscape.

In addition, an exhibition of junk art made from marine waste will be held in conjunction with the international conference held at BEXCO in Busan in the second half of this year to raise awareness about marine environment protection.

A KT&G representative stated, "This year, we have once again joined forces with public institutions and civic groups to ensure that our descendants inherit a clean ocean.” He added, "Through close collaboration, we will attempt to encourage a large number of people to participate in protecting the marine environment, and we will continue to engage in a variety of eco-friendly activities.”

Last year, KT&G collected 7,100 kg of marine waste through 15 marine purification activities, with the participation of approximately 300 individuals, including local activists and KT&G employees.
