362 KT&G delivered 400 million won to improve welfare of leaf tobacco farmers... 2019.05.22

KT&G (CEO, Baek Bok In) delivered 400 million won to promote farmers' welfare for a continuous coexistence with domestic leaf tobacco farmers. This grant will be used for the cost of health screening for 1,000 low income, aged leaf tobacco farmers and 80 farmers' children scholarships.

Because of the continuous decrease in the rural population, the farmers are having difficulty in securing the labor force and the labor intensity of the farmers is very high due to the cultivation of the leaf tobacco which is difficult to mechanize. Especially, leaf tobacco farmers have higher average age than other crops, so more attention should be paid to their healthcare.

KT&G is continuing its support for projects to improve the welfare of domestic leaf tobacco farmers and to reduce the economic burden. From 2013 to this year, KT&G has paid 2,054 million won for medical examinations of the farmers and their children’s scholarships. This year, more than 5,800 people will benefit.

KT&G is making a variety of efforts to protect leaf tobacco farmers by purchasing the entire amount of tobacco leaf in Korea. Recently, we visited the leaf tobacco farmhouse in Gangwon, which suffered from the forest fire, and conducted restoration activities and implantation service. In summer, we send out volunteer groups every year to help farmers who are suffering from labor shortages and carry out harvesting services.

Shin Song Ho, General Manager of the KT & G raw materials division, said, "KT & G has been engaged in various activities to help farmers deal with grievances as farmers' partner." With this support, we hope that farmers will gain vitality and a little help in improving economic conditions. We will take the lead in win-win cooperation with farmers. "
