KT&G (CEO, Baek Bok In) recently visited leaf-tobacco farmers who suffered from forest fire damage and shortage of labor to carry leaf tobacco transplant volunteer activities.

The volunteer work was done in a leaf-tobacco farmhouse in Okgye-myeon, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do, where the recent wild fire in Gangwon area burned 15,000㎡ (about 4,500 pyeong) of agricultural land, house, farm machinery, etc. On that day, 30 employees and volunteers carried out the leaf tobacco transplantation work and delivered the donation money.

On the same day, more than 20 volunteers of KT&G Kimcheon factory employees who visited the leaf tobacco farm in Miwon-myeon, Cheongju-si in Chungbuk, helped farmers who were uncomfortable with chronic diseases to perform the leaf tobacco transplant work at the farm area of 7,933㎡ (2,400 pyeong).

Leaf tobacco is a tricky crop that needs to be planted by transplanting seedlings that are grown in nursery facilities rather than seeding the seeds directly in the field. Transplantation is the most important task in leaf tobacco farming. As a result, KT&G has been carrying out volunteer activities since 2009 for farmers suffering from labor shortages.

Shin Song Ho, General Manager of Raw Materials Headquarter of KT&G said, "This year, the tobacco farmers have been suffering from unexpected forest fires and they have been short of work, and we have been trying to relieve the aggravation of the farmers through volunteer activities. I will pursue coexistence with farmers in various ways. "

KT&G is the only tobacco company operating in Korea, purchasing all of the domestic tobacco leaves, and is making various efforts to protect the farmers by paying 30% of the proceeds from the tobacco sales to farmers in cash. In addition, from 2013 onwards, we have been supporting the welfare of farm households by providing a total of 1.65 billion won for health screening expenses for farmers and scholarship for their children.
