287 KT&G to Volunteer Tobacco Leaf Transplanting for Farmers 2018.04.16

KT&G(사장 백복인)가 일손 부족으로 어려움을 겪는 잎담배 농가를 돕기 위해 충북 청주지역에서 잎담배 이식 봉사활동을 실시했다KT&G (CEO Bok-in Baek) volunteered to help the short-handed tobacco farmers in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do Province with transplanting.


Thirty five employees of KT&G Raw Material Division and R&D Division transplanted seedlings at a  7,933㎡tobacco farm producing about 2,000 kg  a year in Miwon-myun, Cheongju City in Chungcheongbuk-do Province.


Leaf tobacco grows through transplanting after the indoor raising of seeding which is the critical process for productive harvest. KT&G has volunteered to give the short-handed farmers a hand and provide the knowledge of high quality tobacco production for ten years.


KT&G has sought the cooperation with the farmers tot only in spring time for transplanting but in summer for harvesting. Tobacco leaves are harvested during the hot and muggy summer season between July and August depending on manual labor with high intensity. The Company as dispatched volunteer groups during the harvest season for the last 12 years.


Dongsik Kye, Head of Raw Material Production at KT&G Gimcheon Plant said, “Domestic tobacco farmers have suffered from the lack of labor due to the decreasing and aging agricultural population. KT&G  has participated in transplanting and harvesting of tobacco and will continue a variety of support activities as a partner of tobacco leaf farmers.”


KT&G is the only cigarette company in Korea purchasing domestic leaf tobacco and protects farmers in many ways. The company pays for 30% of expected sales revenue of leaf tobacco in advance for farmers. The Company has provided 1,250 million won to sponsor farmers' medical checkups and children's scholarship since year 2013..
