238 KT&G Volunteer Group for Restoration of Ecological System in Mongolia 2016.08.01

▶KT&G Sangsang Volunteer Group made of college students and KT&G employees planted one thousand trees in KT&G Welfare Center Forestry & Agriculture Education Center construction site in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (July 31)


Until August 8, KT&G will be dispatching a volunteer group for the restoration of ecological system to Mongolia suffering the most serious desertification due to global warming.


The volunteer group, a total of 53 members, is made of students from KT&G Sangsang Volunteer and 11 employees of KT&G. 14 Mongolian college students selected by Green Asia Network, an NGO focused on desertification prevention, will also be joining the group.


in Ulaanbaatar, the volunteer group will participate in KT&G Welfare Center Forestry & Agriculture Education Center building activity including planting one thousand trees. The participants will present and discuss on “Economic Development and Environment Protection in Developing Countries” at a Korea-Mongolia Student Environment Forum hosted by Green Asia Network. The volunteers will also be conducting education programs including eco-friendly bag making and mini Olympic games for elementary school students.


In early June, KT&G Welfare Foundation signed an MOU for the establishment of forestry & agriculture education center with the Ministry of Environment of Mongolia. Forestry and agriculture professionals from the Education Center are to be dispatched to all over the Mongolia to prevent desertification via reforestation


A related person of KT&G Welfare Center said, “The establishment of the Forestry & Agriculture Education Center and Reforestation Project is a global social responsibility activity in terms of agriculture improvement, job creation and desertification prevention. The activity will also improve the air quality of Korea by reducing Asian dust.


KT&G ranks the fifth largest tobacco company with increased exports to 50 countries and has provided a diversified social responsibility activities all over the world. Since 2005, the company has dispatched volunteer groups over 30 times to Cambodia which suffered from civil wars. In Uzbekistan, Mongolia, and Indonesia, medical service team made of renowned Korean medical doctors has provided free medical service since 2009. Last year, the company also rebuilt 40 houses of low income households in Indonesia.
